The Empire was battled by the ancient Maltusians, precursors of the Guardians of the Universe, in their efforts to contain the wild magic of the universe. After the Empire's defeat, all of its members were imprisoned on Ysmault, and access to the planet was restricted by the Guardians.
During his career, Green Lantern Corps member Abin Sur was forced to violate that ban in order to save the passengers of a crashed spacecraft. While there, he made the mistake of speaking to the Qull of the Five Inversions, who set Sur on the path to his approaching death by answering a question about his own future. Sur later would demand more information from another Inversion, Atrocitus - who held crucial information divined through blood rituals related to the Blackest Night.
Later, Sur took Atrocitus to Earth; Sur perished in this mission and it was Sinestro and Hal Jordan who brought back Atrocitus to Ysmault. Atrocitus, at one point, would brutally kill the remainder of the Five Inversions and use their blood to power a massive Red Lantern Power Battery. After forging the primary red rings out of the crystallized blood, the forming of the Red Lantern Corps and the rebirth of the Empire of Tears began. Ysmault, since, has served as the Red Lantern Corps' homeworld.
Points of Interest
- Originally, the planet Ysmault was located in Sector 2814. For the Prime Earth universe, this was changed to Sector 666. However, later issues have ignored this shift, including the reasoning for later events making the prior sector of Ysmault critical, so it can likely be deemed noncanon.
