Yz the Thunderbolt is a powerful Djinn hero. He has been a partner to both Johnny and Jakeem Thunder, making him a member of the Justice Society of America.
History
Origins
Yz is one of the many Djinns created by The Presence before even the angels were made. When his eldest brother Elias rebelled to the will of God he and his sister Djinn joined him but refused to kill a group of children that was guarding the Stone of Souls, a stone that was descended from Heaven itself. Their refusal greatly angered Elias who lashed out on them, forcing his sister to give him the Stone so that he could hide it in his home in the Fifth Dimension.[2] While in the Fifth Dimension he met the Imp Mister Mxyzptlk, the two eventually became really good friends and Yz even introduced to him his first wife.[3]
World War Two
During the 30's and 40's Yz became the partner of Johnny Thunder and a member of the Justice Society of America.[4]
In 1940 Yz and Johnny found an unconscious Huntress from the future in their headquarters and rescued her.[5] When she recovered he JSA tried to question her but before they could get any real answer she was pulled back through the timestream.[6]
Modern Age
Years later, while Johnny was hiking in Badhnisia, Mister Mxyzptlk seeked his help to fight the evil Doom-Mite and Yz, happy to team up with his old friend, promptly accepted. With the help of Batman, Superman and other magic users they defeated the evil being from the Sixth Dimension and imprisoned him.[3]
At some unknown point after that Yz and Johnny merged in a single being and became the partner of Jakeem Thunder, who would join the JSA himself.[7]
Doomsday Clock
Due to the machinations of Doctor Manhattan the Golden Age of superheroes was cancelled from history and Johnny, now suffering from dementia, forgot about his fusion with Yz and was put in a retirement home where, possibly due his forgotten Djinn nature, was the last person on Earth to remember about the Justice Society.[8]
Thankfully Superman was able to restore Manhattan's lost connection to his humanity which prompted the omnipotent being to undo his changes to history and restore the Justice Society, which in turn restored Johnny's mind who transformed into the Thunderbolt and helped Superman and the Justice Society stop the superhuman war that was about to break out in the world.[7]
Djinn Wars
When his eldest brother Elias returned to Earth he took control of their sister Djinn and forced her to summon Jakeem who, ignorant of the danger, summoned Yz who was immediately overpowered by Elias. Elias used Yz as a conduit with the Fifth Dimension to steal the Stone of Souls and breach Heaven.[9]
Jakeem and the Teen Titans managed to pass through Hell and reach Purgatory to free Djinn and together they stormed Heaven, defeated Elias and freed all the other Djinns. Djinn reunited Yz and Jakeem and left with them to search for answers about Jakeem and Yz's connection.[10]
The New Golden Age
During a precursor quake to the Lazarus Event Doctor Mid-Nite and Wildcat were brought back to life and Yz rescued them, with Huntress remembering that they would not be the last one to be saved by him and Jakeem.[11]
Some time later he and the JSA were fighting the Angle Man who had summoned an army of Bizarros. Yz and Jakeem found themselves cornered by a group of Bizarros due to their immunity to magic but they were rescued by the time-traveling Huntress.[11]
When Per Degaton attacked the JSA he and Jakeem were among the first to be neutralized but they were rescued once again by the Huntress.[12] He Jakeem and Stargirl where then sent to Germany to retrieve a personal object of Degaton but there they were attacked by a younger version of the villain who was unable to stop them and the various Doctor Fate summoned through time were able to cast him away in the Flashpoint Timeline.[13]
