Zachary Levi (b. September 29, 1980) is an American actor and writer who portrayed Shazam in Shazam! and Shazam! Fury of the Gods, while Asher Angel portrays the character in his Billy Batson form.
Professional History
Zachary Levi is an American character actor best known for his roles in the comedy genre, starring in films such as Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel and Tangled, and television series such as Chuck, Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure, and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. In the early 2000s, he auditioned for the role of Lex Luthor on Smallville, but the role instead went to Michael Rosenbaum.[1] Years later in 2019, he starred as the superhero form of Billy Batson in the DC Extended Universe film Shazam!, while Asher Angel portrayed the character in his human form.
The film garnered positive reviews, as did Levi's performance, and he and Angel reprised their roles in Shazam! Fury of the Gods in 2023. Levi also contributed to the anthology promotional comic for the film, Shazam!: Fury of the Gods Special - Shazamily Matters #1, for which he co-wrote the short story "Door To Death". The sequel was poorly received and failed at the box office, and any plans of a third Shazam! film were dashed when James Gunn and Peter Safran took control of DC Studios, and decided to reboot the DC Extended Universe into the DC Universe.
Personal History
Zachary Levi is the ex-husband of Missy Peregrym.
