Zauriel is a guardian angel from Heaven who once served as a member of the Justice League.

After Batman faked his death to escape the Magistrate, his son Damian Wayne hoped to bring him back to life. To that end, he summoned the angel Zauriel, and demanded to know what became of his father's soul. Zauriel wouldn't tell him, as revealing secrets of the afterlife was forbidden, so the boy used forgotten dark magics to bind Zauriel to Earth, and tortured him for months. When he finally broke, Zauriel revealed the only thing he knew: Batman's soul wasn't in Heaven. Damian forced him to open a portal to Hell, and then left the angel where he bound him, where he would remain for years until he was found and freed by Batman and Talia al Ghul.[1]

Later, Zauriel found himself allied with a group of mortal wizards, including John Constantine, against Merlin's witch-hunters. Eventually, he was defeated, and burned at the stake.[2]

Likely due to his angelic nature, Zauriel would not stay dead forever. Millenia later, in the 853rd Century, Zauriel reappeared in the Tower of Fate, hiding from the forces of the Unkindness alongside many other mystical beings.[3]
