Zodiak is a scientific genius who has mastered several fields, including both chemistry and mechanics. He is also a dabbler in more occult sciences, and it is from this that he takes his nom du crime.

At one point during the 1940's, he began to scheme of ways to use his knowledge and abilities to make himself richer, but feared reprisals from the various costumed heroes of the time, the most notable of which were the members of the Justice Society. In the hope of learning some of their secret weaknesses, he spied on them, and was fortunate enough to overhear a conversation the group had with a man called Galio. Galio claimed to have lived for nearly 500 years after discovering four dazzling secrets that had been sought by alchemists for centuries. Galio knew that he was dying, however, and wished to bequeath the secrets to the Justice Society for safekeeping. Zodiak, realizing how powerful he could become by capturing these secrets for himself, vowed to get to them first.

Despite their best efforts, the members of the Justice Society were consistently beaten to the punch by Zodiak and the villain succeeded in getting his hands not only on the four secrets, but on the JSA members as well. He tried to kill the heroes, but they managed to escape and were able to at last defeat him. Zodiak tried to escape in a plane of his own design, but the mechanisms were flawed and the plane crashed. Although the heroes and the general public believed him to be dead, no body was ever found.

It would be later learned that Zodiak had survived the crash by the simple expedient of being teleported away from the plane before it hit. This teleportation was the work of PER DEGATON, who also teleported Zodiak back in time several years to the start of World War II, and a time when the members of the Justice Society had not met him as yet. Consequently, while Zodiak was fully aware of what the heroes were capable of, they were completely unfamiliar with him. Zodiak attacked two of the team's members, Superman and Batman (along with Batman's teen partner, Robin) but failed to defeat them. He was subsequently teleported back to his original time when Degaton was defeated, and appears to have gone into hiding. Thus far, no record exists of his ever having resurfaced, and his present whereabouts and activities remain unknown.
